Barbra Streisand stars in this musical drama that she co-produced, co-directed and co-wrote. In a complex and passionate tale concerning confusion of gender and of desire, Singer’s eponymous Yentl The Yeshiva Boy is a girl who wants desperately to study Torah and Talmud, and did so clandestinely with her father. After he dies, forbidden by Jewish law to continue, she masquerades as a boy and enters a yeshiva in a town where nobody knows her. Here, she/he is in new and treacherous territory, creating turmoil for herself and her new friends by falling in love with a fellow student (a gorgeous Mandy Patinkin) and marrying his beloved.
