“A small jewel of a film and a splendidly staged, intense emotional journey” — Cineuropa

Markuss is adapting to a new life living with his grandmother in the countryside, but after he teaches a neighbouring girl a cruel lesson that endangers her life, 10-year-old Markuss becomes a social outcast. Having to now work instead of attend school, the only person Markuss is able to bond with is old Sailor, a recluse living in the nearby woods. However the neighbouring girl’s mother wants further action taken against Markuss for his transgression, which threatens to make his life even more unbearable.

Based on a series of short stories by Latvian writer Jana Egle, this coming-of-age film covers numerous themes including prejudice, forgiveness, redemption and abuse. At the centre of the drama is Markuss, a troubled young soul, who has to work hard to win back the sympathy of the town’s inhabitants. While unafraid to explore some heavy subject matter, the storytelling in The Pit is accessible and rewarding, especially regarding Sailor’s mysterious background.
