“A slow-burning and likeable pitch-dark comedy from Romanian director Paul Negoescu.” – Screen International
Having failed to cut it in the city, mild-mannered Romanian cop Ilie takes a low-pressure job as a police chief in a rural village near the Moldovan border. Middle-aged and alienated, he feels the need to be a part of something – to build an orchard, even a home. Although dubious things happen in the village, Ilie only sees what suits him.
When a man is murdered and Ilie does nothing, another bloodied body appears and forces him to jump to the other extreme, trying to be what he has never been before, a man of justice.
Fresh from the U.S. success of his indie hit Two Lottery Tickets, director Paul Negoescu goes into Twin Peaks-like territory and flexes his Coen Brothers’ muscles in his latest darkly comic outing that plays like a Romanian Fargo, with added pitch-black humour and a palatable sense of dread and its inevitable outcome.
