“Salif Cissé dazzles and astonishes … a genuine feel-good movie.” – Cineuropa
Baptiste Mendy is a brilliant voiceover artist who’s struggling to find fame and success in his craft. Pierre Chozène is a successful writer who desperately needs peace and quiet to finish his most daringly honest novel. After a bolt of inspiration, Pierre decides to hire Baptiste to be his personal impersonator. Baptiste will answer all of Pierre’s phone calls – from his publisher, his daughter, his ex-wife – pretending to be him, so that Pierre can focus on his writing. The gig seems straightforward enough, but soon Baptiste realises that assuming the identity of a famous writer comes with more complications than he bargained for.
Led by stellar performances from Denis Podalydès as Pierre and Salif Cissé as Baptiste, this witty and light-hearted comedy interrogates ideas around artistic practice, social obligations and self-representation. Based on a novel by Luc Blanvillain, Guess Who is Calling? reveals the gaping distance between authenticity in artistic output and authenticity in intimate relationships.
