One of Éric Rohmer’s most magical conversation pieces, this sun-drenched tale follows handsome young graduate and amateur musician, Gaspard (an early role for French star Melvil Poupaud) as he holidays to the seaside on the coast of Brittany, hoping his quasi-girlfriend Léna will join him there. He meets the charming Margot, who convinces him to date her friend Solène. When Léna shows up, Gaspard is forced to choose between three women who each offer the possibility of romance, but is stunted by his inability to commit. The most wistful and autobiographical of Rohmer’s seasonal tales, here he paints a flighty portrait of the indecisiveness of youth, and the fickle nature of desire, against one of his most beautiful settings.
