The first of Éric Rohmer’s ‘Tales of the Four Seasons’ centres around the burgeoning friendship between philosophy teacher Jeanne and pianist Natasha. Jeanne has the keys to two different apartments, but nevertheless feels as though she has nowhere to sleep. Meanwhile, all Natasha wants is someone to share her Parisian flat where her father, Igor, is rarely home. Against the resplendent backdrop of Paris and its suburbs in spring, Rohmer observes their conflicting desires, ideas and temperaments play out with typically subtle visual command and emotional delicacy.
