Seeking inspiration for an upcoming film project, Zoja journeys to her family home in Southern Slovakia, her unexpected arrival causing a clash between generations where family secrets are exposed and awkward confrontations abound under the influence of alcohol, mood stabilizers and God.

Gorgeously shot, Liquid Bread imbues a timeless beauty with a fresh and youthful feel. Helmed by Slovak newcomer Alica Bednáriková, Liquid Bread’s singular clarity of vision saw it selected for La Cinef at the 75th Festival de Cannes and Future Frames: Generation NEXT at the 56th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

In the proposed epoch of Eremocene, or The Age of Loneliness, natural life has taken a backseat to the virtual sphere. Here, Earth is barren, silent and uninhabited, and like the films’ two characters who are only present in the form of voiceover - an Artificial Intelligence chatbot and a post-human uploaded consciousness - we are taken on a disembodied journey to find the self.

With her film selected for this year’s Berlinale, director Viera Cákanyová (Frem, CASFFA 2021) blends essayistic principles of contemplative cinema with progressive visuals and 3D scanner images that raise poignant and timely questions about the world we wish to live in. On the precipice of real-world environmental destruction, the rise of technocracy and cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence and political unrest, Notes from Eremocene is a striking and commendable addition to the arena of speculative fiction.
