Shot in crisp black-and-white, Ivo Trajkov’s melodrama Ballad of Piargy is a haunting tale that captures the tensions and moral dilemmas of a village on the brink of war. Based on a 1942 short story by František Švantner, whose stories drew inspiration from myths and ballads, and the bridge between life and death, Ballad of Piargy is the story of a young woman, Juliši (Judit Pechácek), who becomes entangled in a love triangle with her recent husband, and the son of a wealthy landowner. As Juliši’s private life unravels under her father-in-law’s lewd gaze, an impending tragedy looms over the rural town.
