The Story

Abiy Sahle and Alexander Nettelbeck's ensemble performs original instrumental compositions highlighting the unique scales and rhythms of Ethiopian Music in an uplifting performance. Lineup:

Abiy Sahle comes from Ethiopia where he grew up in a family of musicians. He performed as a musician with the Ethiopian circus group from 1995-1998. Since settling in Melbourne, Abiy has performed with many different bands playing saxophone and Ethiopian traditional instruments. Abiy is also a member of Melbourne-based The JAzmaris. “The JAzmaris infuse a mix of original compositions with those of the great Ethiopian composers who have come before them”.

Alexander Nettelbeck is a musician whose playing encompasses classical jazz, blues, Latin, and contemporary music in a unique and individual style, Alexander has performed at jazz festivals Tuscia in Jazz (Italy) Piwinica Pod baranami (Poland), and Melbourne International Jazz Festival to name a few. “Few pianists can combine lyricism with a sense of groove the way that Alexander Nettelbeck does... ” Nikos Fotakis, Australian jazz Net
