MJF James Sherlock Quartet

SynopsisWe welcome The James Sherlock Quartet back to the Jazz Room for the Melbourne Jazz Festival.

Sherlock's sound has warmth and bite. He uses it to produce tense, twisting solos, sometimes churning, sometimes chiming accompaniment.

James Sherlock works with a variety of Australia's finest musicians, including an ongoing duo project with Kristin Berardi, as well as many visiting artists including New Orleans trumpeter Leroy Jones, New York jazz vocalists Sheila Jordan, Chris McNulty and Cyrille Aimee and master drummers Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts and Jon Riley.

Sherlock has also performed/recorded with such diverse artists as British guitar virtuoso Martin Taylor, The Australian Chamber Orchestra, The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, The Queensland Orchestra, Katie Noonan, Megan Washington, Joe Camilleri & New York film composer Howard Shore.

SynopsisFrench gypsy jazz in the infectious style of Django Reinhardt and The Hot Club of France. Elegant swing, tender jazz ballads, gypsy waltzes and hot rhythm are just a few of the trademark sounds from Ultrafox.

Formed in 2008 by veteran guitarist Peter Baylor, Ultravox has enjoyed a busy work schedule with appearances at Australia's favourite clubs, events and festivals.

A professional musician since 1980, in recent years Peter Baylor has toured Australia, the USA, Europe and Japan with a variety of groups including Doug Parkinson, The Dancehall Racketeers, Stringbusters, Flatfoot Shakers and many more. He has supported Bob Dylan, Robert Plant, The Stray Cats, Tav Falco, Rosie Flores, Big Sandy and his flyrite boys, Mark O'Connor and Dan Crary over the years, and more recently Mike Compton.

With his eclectic guitar and vocal style he moves effortlessly from jazz and swing to blues, rockabilly and country styles.

MJF The Margie Lou Dyer Quintet

SynopsisMargie Lou has held down a residency at St. Kilda’s fantastic jazz and seafood restaurant Claypots for half a decade and this show is a rare chance to see her in the East. Her gravelly, astonishingly expressive voice is reminiscent of the best women of early jazz, like Bessie Smith, or Billie Holiday, and her blues-tinged, heavy-grooving New Orleans style of piano playing is unique in Melbourne. Daughter of legendary jazzman Warwick “Wocka” Dyer and musical soulmate and partner of the late Allan Browne, Margie is Melbourne jazz royalty.

Come catch her perform with her enormously talented Quintet. Not to be missed.

MJF Jackie Bornstein Quartet

SynopsisHaving performed venues in Australia and the UK over the past 15 years, Jackie has developed a particular talent for storytelling through song. Known for her richly toned vocals and ability to get to the heart of a tune, Jackie imparts a range of emotions through her use of varied vocal timbres.

Trained classically as a child, Jackie went on to study jazz voice at the Victorian College of the Arts. She was awarded a UK Masters scholarship and focused her thesis on the role of the arts/music in conflict resolution.

Jackie will perform a selection of her favourite bossas, ballads and cool jazz tunes. Featuring the captivating guitarist James Sherlock, Phillip Rex on double bass and drummer extroadinaire Danny Fischer.

Ruth's smouldering vocals invoke the music of Nina Simone with soul when she sings her unforgettable songs and is accompanied by a stellar trio featuring the great jazz pianist Mark Fitzgibbon.

Her likeness to jazz’s beloved artists moved the critics to acclaim her talent at recent performances at the 2015 Edinburgh and Adelaide festivals.

MJF Wilbur Wilde Quartet

SynopsisCelebrated saxophonist Wilbur Wilde blows up a rock-infused jazz storm in his relentlessly grooving and swinging style.

A household name Australia-wide as the resident saxophone player on Hey Hey it's Saturday, Wilde was a game-changer in the 1980s and 90s jazz scene, leading a dynamic and exciting ensemble at key venues in Melbourne and interstate, and helping to broaden the jazz audience.

Wilbur also appeared in The Coolangatta Gold, Dead End Drive-in and Mad Max; achieved chart-topping success with bands OL' 55 and Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons; and recorded and toured with artists including Roy Orbison, Skyhooks, Dire Straits, Cold Chisel, Tiny Tim, Elvis Costello and Garth Brooks.
